Niemikotisäätiö’s client magazine Hyvä mieli has been published. In the first issue of the year, we pause to reflect on safety: what does it mean in everyday life, in communities, and in our own lives – and can safety be built through small actions?
We aim to select a timely and diverse group of ten students for the annual Expert by Experience training. The group size is intentional and based on group dynamics: with around 10 participants, peer learning is effective and interaction works well. In addition, the training facilities set their own limits on group size.
Finland’s mental footprint is large. Over 100,000 people receive disability pension due to mental health problems. In addition, we lose 17 million working days a year due to mental health reasons. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), poor mental health costs Finland 11 billion euros per year. Of that figure, the labour market’s share is as much as 4.7 billion euros.
Niemikotisäätiö, taking the environment into account is a central part of daily work. This work is now being strengthened with renewed environmental and wellbeing themes, which change monthly and bring practical ways to promote sustainable wellbeing in everyday life.
The new themes will be launched at an environmental event held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Malmi Day Activity Centre.
Satu Rintala, Lead Instructor at Niemikotisäätiö’s Otsonpolku, and Emma Heikkinen, Lead Instructor at Valtti Valmennus, participated in an international study visit to Toulouse, France in February together with Finnish partner organisations. The visit was part of an Erasmus-funded collaboration between the Sosped Foundation and the French organisation UFCV, focusing on supporting people with significant barriers to employment in finding their way into working life.

Alongside her role as an instructor, she has in recent years led several extensive initiatives, including the development of data protection practices and advancing the client information system to the next level.
In my view, people’s motivations should not be ranked or judged. During the supervisor training I attended, we discussed several times how even a seemingly self-interested motive can be a good motive in the field of volunteering.
At Niemikotisäätiö’s Haaga Activity Centre, a group of service users runs their own editorial team, producing the annual Haiku magazine. Haiku is not just a magazine; it is a shared project in which everyone has an important role.
