Niemikoti Foundation’s community platform, Niilo, has been completely renewed. The new Niilo can now be found at niilo.me and works directly in your web browser – whether you use a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Niilo is intended for everyone in the Niemikotisäätiö community: residents, users of rehabilitation services, and staff members. Some content is open to everyone, while most features require a user account and login. Logged-in users can access community discussions, the Chat Café, and groups. Staff members also have their own dedicated sections. The public area now includes an improved Events section that makes it easier to discover upcoming activities.
The renewal was driven by a desire to make Niilo an even better place for communication and community interaction. The new platform is more accessible because it works on all devices without requiring a separate app. Creating and sharing content has been made simple, and the platform itself is easier to maintain and develop with new features in the future. The goal is to bring together communication and community services that were previously spread across different platforms. For example, events previously found at kalenteri.niemikoti.fi are now available at niilo.me/events.
Special attention has been given to privacy and security. Niilo runs on Niemikotisäätiö’s own server in Helsinki, Finland, and access to different areas and personal information is carefully managed. Although the platform may resemble familiar social media services, it works very differently. There are no hidden algorithms deciding what users should see or hear. Content appears honestly and naturally, without outside influence.
One of the most exciting new features is Groups. Anyone can create their own group – open to everyone, private for invited members, or completely hidden from other users. Groups provide space for different communities and conversations within the larger Niemikotisäätiö community.
Another new feature is the Personal Diary, which allows users to record their thoughts and experiences. The diary includes mood and topic statistics, as well as customizable appearance settings, making it both practical and enjoyable to use.
The Old Niilo Will Remain Available Until the End of May
The old Niilo application will stop working on 1 June 2026. After that, all community communication will take place through the new Niilo at niilo.me.
As with any newly launched platform, there may still be a few details to refine. If you notice anything you would like to give feedback on, your comments are more than welcome.
Please note that the Niilo platform is currently available only in Finnish.
