Finland’s population is ageing rapidly, and the same trend is visible in the services of the Niemikoti Foundation. The average age of the foundation’s clients is rising, and with age come various illnesses and diverse support needs. For this reason, the Niemikoti Foundation has invested in strengthening its staff’s expertise by providing training on the challenges faced by ageing clients.
The training was carried out by Taitotalo, with the goal of strengthening staff readiness to identify and respond to the specific needs of ageing clients – such as the impact of physical illnesses, memory disorders, and other health-related challenges on daily life and rehabilitation. A deeper understanding of the challenges of ageing enables staff to meet service users more individually and to respond to their needs more effectively.
The training programme’s lectures and exercises covered the following topics:
- Memory disorders and neurological diseases in ageing individuals
- Diabetes in ageing individuals
- Cardiovascular diseases in ageing individuals
- Fall-related accidents (including practical exercises)

The training programme is linked to the strategy drawn up by the Niemikoti Foundation’s Cooperation Group (YTR) for 2024–2026, one of the goals of which is to ensure secure housing for ageing service users.
“It is important that our expertise matches the changing needs of our clients. This training strengthens our staff’s ability to provide comprehensive and individual support, even as the challenges brought by ageing increase,” says Ari Kuusela, Development Specialist.
Niemikoti Foundation is committed to continuous learning and a positive attitude towards training. Regular development of staff expertise ensures that the foundation can continue to provide high-quality and up-to-date services both now and in the future.
