We have turned a new page in our lives: the old year has passed and a new one has arrived. Letting go can sometimes feel bittersweet, and it isn’t always necessary. It’s worth holding on to what has already been tested and proven to work, while at the same time releasing what weighs us down or exhausts us. Sometimes it’s enough for something to take on a new form, or to be done a little differently than before.

The image shows a typewriter with a sheet of paper that reads: “This year I promise…”
“Better the old than the new,” as the saying goes. And there is truth in that, especially when it comes to something that benefits us. We may think, “I’ll start with a clean slate,” even though unlearning habits can be hard work. Often, change doesn’t mean starting over completely, but making small adjustments and strengthening what already works. A challenging situation may arise from trying to break free from a non-functioning relationship, balancing activity and rest, or changing an unconstructive habit into something gentler and more sustainable.

January is traditionally the month of healthy lifestyles and improving fitness. Fruits and vegetables are sold in large quantities, and gyms fill up with exercisers. People seek change after a festive season that may have included plenty of indulgence. Often, even a small change is enough – there’s no need to eliminate everything, as habits can also be adapted to suit oneself better. There is room for treats too, as long as they stay within the bounds of moderation.

A new year usually comes with a resolution. Ideally, it should be realistic – something that can genuinely be achieved. “I would like to spend more time with my family,” a busy parent may wish. “I wish I were kinder to other people,” might think someone who is irritable, cynical, and exhausted. “I wish I had more time for myself,” sighs the one who is always flexible and accommodating. Sometimes a resolution can simply be a promise to do things a little differently than before.

What in your life might benefit from reflection and consideration? Would you remove something that is currently part of it, add something that is missing – or change something slightly, yet meaningfully?

Wishing you a brave 2026!
