The Eco-Deed of 2025 Was the Result of Long-Term Commitment

Niemikotisäätiö’s units compete each year in a friendly spirit in the annual Eco-Deed Contest. The purpose of the contest is to encourage environmentally conscious solutions in everyday life—both big and small—and, above all, to highlight the valuable work being done in the units to promote sustainability.

Units can propose several eco-deeds, and the staff then vote for their favorite. The 2025 nominees once again demonstrated just how many different ways environmental responsibility can be reflected in Niemikotisäätiö’s work.

Eco-Deed of 2025: The Sewing Workshop’s Move into Shared Facilities

The clear winner of the vote was the Sewing Workshop’s move into shared premises with Valtti, which received the highest number of votes. This was not simply a relocation, but a long and carefully planned process, with a strong focus on responsibly recycling and repurposing items.

At the Sewing Workshop, materials accumulated over the years were reviewed carefully and patiently. Textiles, furniture, tools, and craft supplies were directed to UFF, Fida, the Recycling Center, and Sortti—mostly on foot, by tram, or transported in small batches. Service users were also involved, and many items found a new life either in another form of use or with a new owner. The goal was clear: not to send anything to a waste container, but to ensure that items were circulated responsibly.

The work required time, planning, and perseverance, but the result proves that an environmental action can be both concrete and deeply rooted in shared values.

Other Eco-Deeds That Performed Well in the Vote

Among the most popular choices were also:

  • Valtti Valmennus’ decision to stop serving meat and to favor vegetarian and vegan options at all events. This was seen as a strong climate action and an example for others.
  • The restoration of old Artek chairs at Villa Borgis, giving high-quality and durable furniture a new life instead of purchasing new items.
  • Puusuutari’s Christmas calendar, which combined empowering phrases and eco-tips using recycled materials.

In addition, many other meaningful actions were included, such as: planting boxes, more environmentally friendly art supplies, a birdbath made from an old ash container, and games that increase awareness about sorting and recycling.keita, lintujen kylpyallas vanhasta tuhka-astiasta sekä lajittelutietoisuutta lisäävää pelaamista.

Environmental Responsibility Is Built Together

The 2025 Eco-Deed Contest showed that environmental actions are not only individual big decisions, but also grow from small everyday choices, creativity, and a desire to act responsibly. Every suggestion—regardless of the number of votes—represents a step toward more sustainable operations.

Eco-Deed Candidates for 2025

  • Saving printing paper for rent receipts in the re-letting process; changing the method saves 3,000 sheets of paper and a significant amount of printer ink!
  • Restoring old Artek chairs at Villa Borgis instead of buying new ones.
  • Building planting boxes at the Malmi Day Activity Center.
  • Valtti Valmennus no longer serves meat and favors vegan catering at its events.
  • More environmentally friendly material choices are used in the visual arts groups at Villa Borgis.
  • Puusuutari’s TwiitSpa LaLaLaa – an old ash container was upcycled into a birdbath. Special mention for the great name!
  • Puusuutari’s Christmas calendar with empowering phrases and eco-tips made from recycled materials.
  • Puusuutari increased residents’ awareness of sorting waste by playing HSY’s sorting game together with residents.
  • Eco-deeds were also carried out outside the contest. For example, in Siltakylä, plastic waste accumulation is avoided by using personal porcelain mugs during medication rounds and by using public transport for travel, with only a few exceptions.

Great Eco-Deeds, Everyone!

The Environmental Working Group thanks all units and staff for participating, for the ideas, and for the votes. This is a great foundation for continuing toward new eco-deeds in 2026 as well. 🌍💚
