The Niemikoti Foundation’s Subleasing Housing Unit provides a safe home for around 1,100 mental health rehabilitees in Helsinki. Its work is based on long-term leasing, where the foundation rents apartments—often from the City of Helsinki—and subleases them through the SAS procedure to residents in need of support.

The unit’s occupancy rate exceeds 99%, reflecting both the quality of its operations and the genuine care for residents. This high occupancy rate is achieved through careful coordination, a person-centered approach, and strong commitment to supporting everyday life.

In subleasing, independent living is combined with support that is available when needed. Residents are provided with stability and security, creating opportunities for as ordinary a life as possible. Staff know the residents personally and can respond quickly to everyday challenges, such as issues related to rent payment, coping, or neighbor relations. This ensures that residents are not left alone. Support is also available at night through Niemikoti Foundation’s night service, which operates every day of the year.

Collaboration with the city, residents, and other stakeholders is an essential part of the work. Housing is not only a roof over one’s head, but also an opportunity to build an independent and safe life. Niemikoti Foundation’s Subleasing service supports this opportunity—one home and one person at a time.
