Environmental Work

Environmental Work as Part of Daily Life at Niemikoti Foundation

Our climate and environment are in poor condition, and according to forecasts, the consequences will be catastrophic unless action is taken. A single small act can lead to great achievements when we all take part in the effort. At Niemikoti Foundation, we want to do our part in giving the environment a chance to recover and thrive in its diversity.

Niemikoti Foundation’s Ecology in a Nutshell

Environmentally friendly and renewable energy

The electricity we use is produced in an environmentally friendly way. We hold origin certificates for hydropower production.

Food waste

We actively take part in different campaigns. For example, during Food Waste Week we focused on the amount of biowaste generated in our operations. Each of our units monitored the amount of food waste and came up with and implemented concrete solutions to reduce it.

Mobility

In 2018, we conducted a commuting survey (HSL). The results encouraged participants to come up with ideas on how the employer could support commuting. We promote the use of public transport, and the use of Helsinki city bikes for commuting was also examined in the survey. We also participate in motivating events such as the Kilometer Competition.

Eco-support activities

We train new eco-support persons in cooperation with EcoCompass. In 2018, we trained 23 people, and in 2016, 28 people. Both service users and staff members who have completed the training are enthusiastic about ecological work and inspire others by committing together to sustainable development and good environmental actions.

Circular economy

We recycle, make versatile use of materials, and design and produce items from recycled materials. In our sewing workshop, a vegetable bag was designed, tested, and produced to positively challenge store-bought, imported bags, while also being practical. The vegetable/fruit bag is sold in the Foundation’s online shop.

Social and healthcare sector (Sote)

We also want to be an actor in the social and healthcare sector that is consistently and determinedly committed to promoting and carrying out good environmental actions together with staff, service users, and networks.

EcoCompass as guidelines for our activities

Niemikoti Foundation joined the EcoCompass environmental management system in 2014. With EcoCompass, the Foundation can comprehensively improve its environmental management and eco-efficiency. EcoCompass is a tool for managing environmental matters, offering a systematic way of carrying out environmental leadership.
