For two decades, the association has offered peer support, activities, encounters, and meaningful everyday moments to people for whom community truly matters. The initiative originally came from service users themselves \u2013 and that continues to be Vernetti\u2019s strength. Seppo remembers well how the ideas started to take shape as they considered how the space could be used and what new opportunities it might offer to service users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind it all was the Mielikki Caf\u00e9, whose operations gradually shifted to Vernetti. Service users held several meetings to explore how an association could be founded and whether the caf\u00e9\u2019s cash reserve could be transferred to serve as the starting capital of the new association. In the end, it was concluded that the transfer was possible, and this gave Vernetti the initial funding it needed to begin its activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later on, the caf\u00e9 operations were taken over by Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6\u2019s food services, and Vernetti no longer runs the caf\u00e9 itself. However, many other activities have emerged since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peer Support and Technology \u2013 How the Name Was Born<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The core ideas of the association became peer support and IT-related support, both of which were timely needs. The name Vernetti was created from these two elements: peer support (vertaistuki in Finnish) and the internet (netti in Finnish), together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Renovating the Space and the Support of Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6 renovated the space for the association at its own expense, even though project funding was not granted. The architectural firm Rauhalammi designed the facilities, sliding doors, routes, and accessibility \u2013 everything required to build a new kind of community space. This investment is still remembered as a key enabler: without the foundation, Vernetti would not exist in its current form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the association\u2019s 18 founding members, 6\u20137 are still active today. This shows how meaningful the community has become to many over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Vernetti Do Today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vernetti organises activities throughout the year \u2013 precisely when they are most needed. The activities are supported by Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6, and the aim is to increase inclusion, prevent loneliness, and offer safe places to meet also in the evenings, on weekends, during holidays, and even during the organisation\u2019s summer break month. Chairperson&nbsp;<strong>Kaisa<\/strong>sums it up: \u201c<em>We want to be open exactly when other places are closed<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monthly Member Coffee Meetings and Active Board Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Member coffee gatherings are held on the first Thursday of every month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are a place to discuss upcoming trips, events, and the association\u2019s news.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The board meets once a month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It consists of a chairperson, a vice chairperson, six regular members, and three deputy members \u2013 most of them service users themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The activities are supported by the instructors&nbsp;<strong>Minna Harju<\/strong>&nbsp;and Marko Hanni, who take part in the meetings to offer guidance and support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trips, Events, and Outings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vernetti is an active community that regularly heads out together \u2013 and often completely free of charge for members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection of trips and events includes, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1\u20132 trips every month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>theatre evenings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ice hockey and football matches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a trip to Tallinn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a planned trip to P\u00e4rnu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a cruise to Stockholm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seasonal outings, such as the autumn visit to the Halva candy factory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sami<\/strong>&nbsp;serves as the trip coordinator and independently organises destinations: when he discovers an interesting place in the city, he immediately starts thinking about planning a trip there for Vernetti. The activities are largely organised by peers themselves \u2013 without staff involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Vernetti Mean to Its Members?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Members describe Vernetti as a warm, open, and equal community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kirsi<\/strong>&nbsp;says that it feels pleasant and safe to be part of the community.<br><strong>Rauno<\/strong>&nbsp;adds: \u201c<em>Everyone is a peer. Everyone is taken into account. Everyone is equal.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the trips, travels, and shared moments have created lasting memories. The Valentine\u2019s Day pastries at the Haaga centre are still remembered fondly \u2013 each year they were even more impressive than the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peer Support in Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Peer support is at the heart of Vernetti\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be seen in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>trips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shared everyday activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conversations and encounters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the work of the board<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>All members help one another, and simply being together has been the most important thing in Vernetti for 20 years<\/em>,\u201d Sami says. In addition, IT support is part of the peer activities \u2013 \u201cpeer support and the internet\u201d are still the association\u2019s core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If Vernetti Were a Person \u2013 What Kind of 20-Year-Old Would It Be?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The thought experiment brought smiles to the group\u2019s faces. Vernetti would be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>balanced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mature, yet full of possibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>friendly and helpful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adaptable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a friend who offers support through life\u2019s challenges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s like our own child \u2013 a 20-year-old with a strong foundation and a future ahead<\/em>,\u201d as Minna and Marko describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vernetti\u2019s Future \u2013 Small but the Best<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The future is not expected to bring growth in numbers, but in quality. Marko and Minna sum up the goal:<br>\u201c<em>We don\u2019t want to be the biggest association in Finland, but the best.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>around 60 members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a committed board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a clear annual plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>room for spontaneous activities (such as theatre trips that start from an idea)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The voice of the members is the foundation that guides the activities. All new ideas are warmly welcomed. Cooperation with Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6 is vital for the association, and it will remain strong. Niemikotis\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6 become a community member during the anniversary year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is recommended to join in January to enjoy the benefits for the whole
